Foz Do Iguacu (State of Parana) - Jan 13-15, 2017
LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR IGUACU:
At the end of our Iguacu Falls and Itaipu Dam field tour, students will be able to:
1. Articulate the key concepts in electricity generation (hydro, wind, geothermal, coal/gas fired plants etc)
2. Explain the impacts of dams on the environment (ref. Damnation).
3. Articulate the impacts of tourism on the local economy.
4. Discuss the evolution and impacts of birds on the environment.
ACTIVITIES
i. January 13th: We get there after 3:15 pm. We will check in, have our BBQ and relax (choice between BBQ and
churrascarria!).
ii. January 14th: Iguacu Falls tour. This deserves a full day.
iii. January 15th: Visit the Itaipu Dam and the Ecomuseum, discuss hydropower and energy in general.
Depart Iguassu Falls at 7:09pm and arrive in Sao Paulo at 9:05pm, leave 11:25pm and arrive into JFK at 6:40am am on the 16th
Assigned work for blog:
Watch the three videos discussed in number 1 from this page and discuss the opportunities and challenges in developing hydro power in different countries. Your write up should be 2 to 3 pages, and it should be posted by December 10th, 2016.
The following documentaries will help in preparing for this part of the trip:
1. Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, 14GW (40 mins), compare with The Three Gorges Dam, 22.5 GW in China (23 mins) and
Grand Coulee Dam in the US, 7 GW (54 mins)
2. Iguacu Waterfalls (15 mins)
